What To Look For In A Good Shutter Installation

So you’ve bought new shutters. You’ve saved up the money and you’ve waited a long time, but they’re finally in, and the installer has just finished. How do you know it’s a good job well done? It's important to be aware of the things to look out for in a good shutter installation.

A List Of Qualities In A Good Shutter Installation

1. Do The Shutters Open Smoothly?

If the shutters have been installed correctly, all panels should open and close smoothly. No rubbing against the frame (unless it has panel feet) or hitting other panels.

2. Is it sealed?

Depending on where the window is or how it’s fixed, it should have a neat line of sealant around the outside to cover any screw holes and stop light bleed behind the frame. Not all installs need this, particularly if it is a custom colour frame or a wallpapered wall where a line of sealant won’t look good. An alternative to using sealant is using coverstrips, where thin strips can be glued onto the frame to cover gaps and uneven surfaces.

3. Do Your Windows Still Open?

A lot of shutters are fixed directly into the window frame. Sometimes screws can penetrate into the channel behind the frame that houses the window weights, preventing the window from opening properly. This is easy to remedy, but is a pain if you only realise 3 months after the install!

4. Do the panels stay open?

Shutters should fold back and sit nicely against the wall when you open them. Watch for panels that swing back into the room.

5. Are all the panels lining up?

This is for tier on tier shutters, particularly in a bay window. The gap that runs horizontally between the shutters is called the tier split, and should line up the whole way along the bay.

6. Is everything what you expected?

It goes without saying, mistakes can happen in the manufacturing process. Are the colours right? The panel configurations what you expected? Make sure you are happy before signing off.

Final Note

Remember that shutters are hand crafted. There will always be slight discrepancies between shutters, and should be seen as part of the character of the shutters. That being said, don’t put up with bad workmanship or faulty work, because you are the one who has to live with it!
